Balance is a sculptural sketch from an ongoing series of sculptures and drawings exploring the concept of Bounded Creativity — the idea that limits and constraints can both hinder and stimulate creativity and innovation.
While constraints are often perceived as obstacles, this body of work considers how, when approached thoughtfully, they can become a positive and productive force — focusing attention, sharpening intent, and accelerating creative outcomes.
In the drawing, a dense, structured core of intersecting lines suggests containment, order, and imposed boundaries. This central form is offset by more fluid, unrestrained lines that extend beyond it, tracing uncertain and exploratory paths into open space. Together, these contrasting elements visualise the tension between structure and freedom.
As a proposed sculptural structure, Balance explores what gives rise to creativity, and how it can be held, released, and made available for others to use. The image captures the fragile equilibrium where creativity is neither constrained nor uncontrolled, but precisely poised between the two.
